Some of the actions we have implemented include us being a paperless Opticians. All our patient’s files are securely and confidentially stored on our data system. Any relevant letters, orders and lens checks are all scanned on to the patients file and then shredded. All our shredded paper is collected and recycled on a monthly basis and cardboard waste is collected for recycling each week. It’s a shame that we have to have so much packaging on our deliveries, something that companies need to look at moving forward. We have also recently introduced a new electronic system for NHS patients called EGOS, where patients can electronically sign their NHS documents reducing paper forms being issued. These forms are sent to the NHS digitally reducing the need to use a postal or courier service.
Being a small independent Optician, we are not restricted in what frames we can stock, giving us the freedom to choose and support companies that are openly working towards environmentally friendly options. In store, we do have stock a selection of Eco Conscious frames. This is a range of spectacles for Gents and Ladies that the acetate that the frames and dummy lenses are made of is certified as fully biodegradable and all frames with metal components are made with recycled material also. Every Eco Conscious frame has plastic free packaging to further support such a worthy objective. Eyespace who stock these brands have collaborated with a non-profit organisation which aim to plant one tree for every Eco Conscious frame purchased. The same Optical Company has just launched a range of children’s and adults frames which have been repurposed from plastic waste found in our oceans, a problem which we are all aware of. We can’t wait to stock these and will be ordering them very soon. We are proud to support such an innovative design and only hope that other companies take notice and follow suit.
Hilton Opticians also offer a service so patients can return their old spectacles to us; it’s amazing how many pairs you collect over the years. These are forwarded on to Charities that send the glasses to third world countries. The frames are distributed to closest matching prescriptions, helping improve people’s vision and quality of life and recycling as well.
