Where It All Began

Hilton Opticians • April 25, 2020

Hilton Opticians was established in 2012. The independently owned practice opened alongside Hilton Pharmacy which are both joined on to the Wellbrook Medical centre on Welland road.

Hilton is a village and Civil Parish located in the South Derbyshire district. The village has seen major development over recent years due to The Ministry of Defence selling their 280 acre site for re-development in 1993. The population has grown and continues to grow as new areas are developed; the 2021 Census confirms this as the population is now 8661 compared to 7714 in 2012. The Village is now a large commuter village with easy access to Burton-on-Trent, Derby, Nottingham and Birmingham.

Hilton was mentioned in the Doomsday book in 1086, being owned by Henry De Ferrers and being worth just 10 shillings! The buildings in Hilton are generally new with the recent developments but in the older part of the village on Main Street, you will be able to see The Old Talbot public house which is 16th Century, the Wesleyan Chapel which was erected in 1841. Just round the corner from Main Street, in Mill lane you will find the Georgian building, The Hilton House Hotel. This was the ancestral home of Herbert Martin Massey. He was a Senior British Officer at the Stalag Luft III who authorised ‘The Great escape’, a blue plaque is visible on the outside of the building to commemorate this. It is now a hotel and restaurant and popular with the people of Hilton.

Further along you will find the beautiful 16th Century House, Old Wakelyn Hall. It is believed the Mary Queen of Scots Stayed there briefly before she was imprisoned at the nearby Tutbury Castle.

As the Village has grown, a new retail area was opened with a Tesco Express, vets, Hilton Brook Public house, dominos pizza, estate agent and more recently in 2016, an Aldi was built. Now Welland road can take care of your health, your teeth, your prescriptions and your eyes. As the community continues to grow, we hope Hilton opticians can stay part of the community and help those of all ages to keep their eyes healthy.
